| Greater Accuracy With
GPS. |
From May 1st, GPS has been up to 10 times more accurate than
before.
GPS was originally developed by the US Government as a military
tool, and when its wider applications were recognised, it was made available to
the public in a deteriorated format, Selective Availability (SA).
Last
year, plans were announced to modernize GPS by adding two new civilian signals
to enhance the civil and commercial service, and a commitment was given to
switch off SA by 2006.
Military confidence has enabled the switch-off
date to be brought forward.
The US President has also announced that an
additional 18 satellites are currently being built or already awaiting launch
to further enhance the service.
