The current Severn class lifeboat RNLB The Will was the first
production model of this class and had undergone various modifications when the
volunteers at Falmouth offered to have the lifeboat on temporary duty in March
1997. It was agreed at the time that the temporary allocation would not affect
Falmouth's new Severn class lifeboat allocation.
Commenting on the
allocation Michael Vlasto, Chief of Operations says, 'Falmouth is a key
lifeboat station situated 22 miles from Fowey and 15 miles from The Lizard,
providing all-weather lifeboat cover from Dodman Point to Black Head, including
the notorious Manacles and out to the main shipping lane. Falmouth crew and
officials were unanimous in their wish to operate a Severn class lifeboat which
has carried out 55 services, saved 14 lives and assisted 65 others since March
1997.'
There are now 22 Severn class lifeboats in operation in the
RNLI's fleet. RNLB The Will will go into the RNLI's reserve fleet and replace
other Severns when they need maintenance or repair.
