RNLI to forge new links with Southampton University

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution and the University of Southampton are to work together to carry out research and development projects for the charity's lifeboats while supporting the training of future professional engineers.

This formal link will be made on Tuesday 27 February at 12.15pm at Southampton Oceanography Centre when the Chairman of the RNLI, Peter Nicholson, will exchange copies of the agreement with the Vice Chancellor of Southampton University, Professor Sir Howard Newby.

'The RNLI is at the forefront of technological change and development in the small boat industry and we have worked with the University before over the use of materials used in the construction of lifeboats, but this partnership will be much more proactive and will enable us to ensure that future generations of lifeboats, and the crews that operate them, will benefit from the most up-to-date technology available' says Bob Cripps, the RNLI's Engineering Manager.

'This more direct link with one of the leading universities involved in engineering and marine and naval architecture will be of mutual benefit, and will enable us to draw upon a large number of specialists and facilities, and the University will gain from having the RNLI as an industrial partner' he adds.

The first project to be worked on will be lifeboat repair techniques.

Professor Ajit Shenoi of the School of Engineering Sciences at the University says:-

'The University has worked closely with the RNLI over many years and I am delighted that we are now formalising these links. This new jointly managed programme will be an integral part of our teaching and research activities at all levels, enabling our students to see the benefits of research directly applied to lifeboat safety and design.
It will also ensure a collaborative approach to technology transfer of the fundamental research being carried out at the University.'
One of the newest RNLI lifeboats, Eric and Susan Hiscock ( Wanderer), the Severn class from Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, will be alongside the Oceanography Centre on 27 February for guests to view and meet the crew.
