This year's National 'Clean Up' will take place at Pant, on the Montgomery Canal, on the 24th/25th March 2001. Activities for the weekend will be mainly clearing the line of the canal, so a lot of scrub bashing and bonfires. Mike Palmer, Waterway Recovery Group Chairman explained, "We had planned to have a massive party at Pant, as part of WRG's 30th Anniversary celebrations. Unfortunately, due to the petrol crisis, only a limited number of people could get there. The National Clean Up weekend will carry on those efforts of last year and hopefully make a huge impact on the two mile length of overgrown canal bed". The site is different to the usual clean up weekends in that the canal has no water in it and there will be a severe lack of shopping trolleys and tyres littered on the canal bed. Mike Palmer said. "The weekend will be renamed as a 'Clean and Jungle Bash', after all we are cleaning the canal bed of vegetation, it's just not the usual dredging out of unknown objects from beneath the water". Everyone is welcome to take part in the 'Clean & Jungle Bash' at Plant, which promises to build on the success of previous years. Accommodation will be at West Felton Village Hall. Cost is £8 for the weekend, all meals are provided. To book or for further details you can contact Ian Wingfield, Waterway Recovery Group, PO Box 114, Rickmansworth, WD3 1ZY. WRG also has a website with all the latest information, news, reports and photographs at http://www.wrg.org.uk Alternatively, further details and a booking form will be included in issue 185 of 'Navvies', due out in mid-February.
